A spontaneous hike in walkers’ paradise in the heart of the Alpstein massif.

Discover the best side of the Appenzeller region and hike through fantastic Alpine meadows, impressive rock formation and outstanding viewing point – simply photographers’ paradise and still ability to catch probably the last rays of sun this autumn.

The idea is to start as start at Wasserauen and go up with the cable car to Ebenalp where you can find an amazing hut (Gasthaus Aescher – Wildkirebli) just built into a massive rock. After a photo session on the spectacular surrounding we have two options (depending on the group physical ability and strength):

Hike Option 1: will take the path that leads from the mountain cable car station to Wildkirchli and then goes along the steep slopes to the Seealpsee lake, another spectacular place in the area, to shoot even more, and from there to Wasserauen. The way from Äscher to Seealp is not super easy but not very difficult neither, it just needs to be taken with the necessary caution. If you have vertigo than probably this hike is not necessarily for you. Here’s the link to the hike.

Ebenalp – Seealpsee – Wasserauen
Distance: 7.81km (or 6.43km if we do not go around the lake)
Ascent/Descent: 169m/899m
Min/max elev.: 867m/1596m
Hiking time (without shooting) ca. 2h40m

Hike Option 2: super easy hike that heads west to Chlus and comes back the same way. The diverse Alpine flora will impress hikers on the way. The mountain path is easy for everyone to walk on and is not strenuous. After having a relaxing time with drinks at the beautiful Gasthaus Aescher, we will then go down to Wasserauen with the cable car. Here’s the link to the hike.

Ebenalp – Chlus – Ebenalp
Distance: 3.41km
Ascent/Descent: 258m/256m
Min/max elev.: 1534m/1730m
Hiking time (without shooting) ca. 1h20m

What to take:
Your camera with wide angle and zoom lenses, filters (grey, half-gray – if you use), tripod (in case you want to exercise long exposure shots), charged batteries and empty memory card.

Proper hiking shoes, cloth layers incl. windstopper to address current weather conditions,  cap, hiking poles, sun cream, water, some snacks and good humor.

Train Ticket: Zurich-Wasserauen-Zurich – 39 CHF (full price) or 19.50 CHF if you have halb-tax
Cable car: 20CHF single trip (full price) / 31CHF return trip (full price) if we do the easy path (option 2). SBB Half-Fare travel card and GA valid on standard individual tickets

How to get there:
You need to take the following connection from Zurich
08:09 Zurich HB, Platform 9 – IR 37 (direction St. Gallen) – 09:10 Gossau SG, Platform 3
09:21 Gossau SG, Platfomr 11 – S 23 1093 (direction Wasserauen) – 10:12 Wasserauen

The return back to Zurich depends very much on the group pace and the time spent on shooting and relaxing with the beautiful scenery.

If you want to join, please register to this event on the website so I can get an idea about the group – we will decide on the spot which hike option we’ll take (demanding – option 1 or super easy – option 2).

And if you have any questions, please feel free to email/call me. I will meet you at the train station in Wasserauen.
