Stephens approach is quiet and considered when working on his street reportage series: “I work in confined spaces. It may be one street or within the walls of one building, but every wall, stairwell, room, back alley is massively important to me. This approach makes you as the photographer slow down, both mentally and physically. You need to think creatively, have control, be patient and wait for the right moments…it’s slow journalism”.
We will use the area near Zürich Hauptbahnhof as our reportage playground, where we will create a series of unique and playful images of street life in Zurich.
Saturday will be dedicated solely to photographing in the streets, with Stephen on hand to give immediate feedback and guidance. On Sunday, the participants will continue photographing, but Stephen will also set up an ‘editing base’, where each participant will receive a 30 minute session, to look through the work produced, ask any questions and gain instant advice before heading back onto the streets.

Before the workshop commences, Stephen wants the participants to consider what is needed to make a short series of street reportage images. Think about how you can use a personal approach of trying to capture the essence of a place, always thinking about composition, form, colour and light.
You will also need a digital camera and some sort of mobile phone for communication during the workshop.
